Sat Nam
everyone.
Our tour is coming to a
close. We are at Kripalu, a
beautiful retreat center in New England that is dedicated to the science of
yoga. I am really appreciating the
opportunity to delve into the teaching experience. It has been a little scary, at times not knowing what I
would say or do next. By God's
Grace I have been relaxing into it and going with the flow.
In class today I was
inspired to talk about the concept of identity.
Each of us has a whole set
of identities. A mother, a father,
a son, a husband, a wife, a daughter, a musician, a doctor, a businessman, etc.
etc. These are simply roles that
we are fulfilling.
One day Yogi Bhajan asked
me, "So you want to be a singer?" Then he started laughing... a good
belly laugh. "That is all you
want to be?" he asked as he slapped his knee and continued to laugh. I was speechless. I didn't know what to say. Yes, it was true, I wanted to be a
singer. At the time I was in my
twenties.
He turned his attention to
someone else in the living room, and began talking to them. There were many
people who were sitting in the company of the Master, in a state of love and
devotion. He was in a merry mood,
teasing this person, that person, asking for food to be brought to so and so,
getting on the phone for a call from India. People were coming in and out bringing in various
dishes.
I sat on the floor with my
back up to the couch in a mild state of confusion, but decided to close my eyes
and meditate on what my spiritual teacher said. Amidst all the voices in the living room I went deep within
and found a moment of silence. I
realized that my soul came to this earth,
to incarnate as a Sikh of the Guru, and a student of Yogi Bhajan. With this incarnation I would have much
to share and teach people based on my experience. In this moment the vibration
of my soul's job, my soul's career so to speak came to the forefront.
Yes, now I am a
singer. However I have never
forgotten that day and continue to pray to God and Guru that I live in the
vibration of my soul.
Yogi Bhajan teaches us that
as the last breath leaves our body at the moment of death, we see, feel and
experience our entire life in a matter of nine seconds. After we have experienced this, the
soul is either released to merge with God, or goes back to earth to take care
of unfinished lessons.
Careers are important,
taking care of your family is important.
If however one identifies
so deeply with our earthly identities, and forgets the spirit, at the time of
death we may just go straight back to earth because we are so identified with
it.
So I urge you to get in
touch with your spirit and find the way to your complete merger with God.
Love,
Snatam
